Final Touch

WE ARE NEARING THE END OF THE JOURNEY. It’s time to put the finishing touches on the perfect resume. As we’ve already discussed, accomplishments are the heart of the resume. That section is the only one that can actually help get you in the door; it’s imperative that you make this area shine.

For those of you who like to think in sports terms, consider this: everything else on your resume is like playing defense; the only offense you have is the accomplishments section. (And your cover letter.)

One thing you need to do is use impact words. What are impact words? They are strong verbs and nouns. They are the meat of writing, just like the work history is the meat of your resume.

It’s almost ironic that the place on your resume where you need the most powerful words tends to be the one place where all the weak words show up. Examples from actual resumes:

• Responsible for improving manufacturing 30%…

• Responsible for building new disk drive plant…

• Charged with increasing sales…

• Made improvements to…

These are weak statements, using weak words! Compare the above with this:

• Improved manufacturing by 30%…

• Built new disk drive plant…

• Increased sales…

• Improved…

One rule to remember is look for words ending in ing, because you can almost always replace them with an action verb that has real impact. Since resumes are written in past tense (or should be), your verbs should be powerful past-tense verbs. Most of them will end in ed.
